This year, the Filipinos will once again choose their political leaders. Being away from the Philippines, many are mainly dependent on what they see in social media and hear from their relatives and friends. With the floods of information available in social media, especially the proliferation of fake news, it is important for overseas Filipinos, especially those in Japan to know the factual information to guide them and be able to form a more responsible decision in choosing future political leaders. The English Pastoral Ministry of the Catholic Tokyo International Center (CTIC) of the Archdiocese of Tokyo together with the Center for Migrant Advocacy in Manila have thought of coming up with this voters’ education online session to help everyone interested in arriving at a well informed and conscientious decision as they express their right of suffrage.
This online seminar will carry the following objectives:
- to inform overseas voters of the importance of their participation in elections. What’s in it for them?;
- to know the candidates vis a vis their concerns as overseas Filipinos and OFWs so migrant situation and issues that we hope candidates can respond to; and
- to know the technical concerns regarding the exercise of overseas voting.
The topics to be discussed are the following:
- Suffrage as a right, suffrage in the context of democracy and democratic societies and good transparent accountable governance;
- An overview of migrant situation with the emphasis on OFWs in Japan and the migrant agenda;
- An input on overseas voting exercise and the trend in registration and voting.
